AND NOW A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR....
"Finally, the wash bowl is gone." I understand that some [or many?] were not emotionally attached to the metal baptismal bowels which we have used as fonts in both of our churches of St. Mary and St. Joseph for about seven years. It's interesting that I personally never heard the comment while they were in place, only when they were replaced by the new fonts in both churches. I guess no one wanted to hurt Father's feelings. Ha. Actually, I always considered the bowls temporary, hoping to eventually find something more permanent. What that would be I wasn't sure.

Being An RCIA Sponsor
Being a sponsor is like being a trusted friend. You share what you can. You offer support and counsel as you are able and to the extent that is needed or desired.
As a sponsor from our parish community, you will walk with a catechumen or candidate through a formation process that reaches a climax at the Easter Vigil.
You may be asking yourself whether you are worthy or qualified. Remember St. Paul 's words: "We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us" (2 Corinthians 4:7). Keeping these words in mind may keep you from becoming too worried about being an unworthy sponsor and help you avoid taking too much credit for what God will accomplish through you.
- Sponsors should be confirmed Catholics, in valid marriages, and active in their faith (regularly going to Eucharist) as they represent the Catholic community.
- Sponsors are companions on a journey of faith (they are not catechists).
- A sponsor is respectful and not judgmental toward their catechumen/candidate.
- A sponsor serves as a bridge between the catechumen/candidate and the church.
-
Think about becoming an
RCIA sponsor this year!

It will begin the week of October 2nd and will conclude the week of November 6th. It will be held at Fitzwilly's on Northgate (across from Texas A&M University) beginning at 6pm Tuesday evening. Advent and Christmas Choir
The Adult Choir will begin preparation for Advent and Christmas music on Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm. If you are interested in participating during this season, please mark your calendars and plan to attend choir practice every Wednesday at 7pm in the Church. We would love to have you!
We are in need of instrumentalists for the choir: flute, oboe, guitar, trumpet, violin, or whatever your instrument of choice happens to be. There is also a need for another accompanist (organ and/or piano) to help out when our regular accompanists are not available. If you are interested in either of these activities, please contact Linda Armstrong at 825-0565, or call the church office and leave your name and phone number.
The special Children's Choir, which will sing at the Children's Mass on Christmas Eve and on the Feast of the Holy Family in January, will begin practice after 10:30 Mass on Sundays, starting on Sunday, October 21. All children ages 7-16 are invited to participate. Practice will last for about an hour on each Sunday in the Church. Those children who would prefer to be in the Handchimes Choir should plan to attend that choir practice on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm in the Hall.
There were many compliments floating around on our Bazaar day regarding the singing of our congregation. A couple from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, with 2400 families in their parish, told us that our congregation sings louder and better than theirs does. Our organist, Sue Langston, heard from the director of the Methodist Church in College Station that they had heard about our congregation and how well they sing. You're becoming famous! Maybe the Holy Spirit is using you to bring people to our parish to see what's happening. What a wonderful thought! Keep up the good work; it is truly a joy to work for you. --Jubilate Deo!
40 Days For Life
40 DAYS FOR LIFE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN
September 26-November 4
40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God's power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in America .
The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer , fasting , and peaceful activism , with the purpose of repentance, to seek God's favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.
Why 40 days?
God has used the period of 40 days throughout history to bring about major transformation...
- Noah experienced transformation during 40 days of rain.
- Moses was transformed by 40 days on Mount Sinai
- David was transformed by Goliath's 40 day challenge
- Elijah was transformed when God gave him 40 days of strength from one meal
- Nineveh was transformed when God gave the city 40 days to remain faithful
- Jesus was transformed and empowered by 40 days in the desert
- The disciples were transformed after spending 40 days with Jesus following His resurrection
Just think of the transformation God could accomplish if individuals and communities across America unite together this fall for 40 days of prayer and fasting, pulling out all the stops to end the violence of abortion.
What we will be doing at St. Mary/St. Joseph community:
Prayer
Please join us every Wednesday at the 9:00am Mass at St. Mary's starting September 26 and continuing through October 31. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Adoration from Benediction following Mass until 12:00noon. Someone needs to be at Adoration at all times, so we will be signing people up to sit and pray with Our Lord during the times He is exposed in the Blessed Sacrament.
Fasting
Christ said there are demons that can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. Fasting is a powerful means of drawing closer to God by blocking out distractions. Fast from food. Fast from television. Fast from apathy and indifference. Fast from whatever it is that separates you from God. If we all work together, our heavenly Father will hear us and heal our lives, our churches, our communities, our nation, and our world.

RCIA Roundup
RCIA Roundup
(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
- Have YOU been worshipping with us, but have never taken the steps to become Catholic?
- Have YOU been away from the Church for whatever reason, but would like to revisit the beliefs and doctrines of the Catholic Church?
- Do YOU know of anyone who has shown an interest in the Catholic faith but needs a little nudge?
- Do YOU know of spouses or adult children of parishioners who are non-Catholic and yet who might want to learn more about Catholicism?
- Are YOU aware of any baptized Catholics, who for one reason or another, were not raised in the church?
Our baptismal promise requires that each of us be disciples of Christ, encouraging others to know, love, and serve Him. St. Mary's/St. Joseph's RCIA program can only be successful with the help of all parishioners. Please do YOUR part! Either contact adults who are interested in learning more about our Catholic faith...or call Sharon Skeans (936-448-2740) with names and phone numbers, and she'll contact them.
Inquirers or parishioners may also contact Sharon Skeans at skeans@consolidated.net.

All St. Mary's Men's Club members, or anyone wishing to contribute, should either bring their toys/contributions to the November 20th SMMC meeting, or leave them at the Parish Office with Gail Sowell no later than November 30th. All cash donations will be used to purchase toys.

St. Mary's Men's Club will be holding their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 16, 2007. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the SM Hall.
Food Pantry Sunday
The First Sunday of the Month is Food Pantry Sunday.
A few can goods from each family add up to a parish family reaching out, sharing and living the teachings of the gospel and Saint Vincent de Paul. Large wicker baskets are provided in the foyer of the St. Mary hall and St Joseph to accept your offerings.
Saint Vincent De Paul
This month, our meeting will be on Thursday, October 8th.
The Parishes of St. Mary and St. Joseph have been most generous in their prayers and support of the Saint Vincent de Paul organization and we Thank You. The last Black Bag collection for the support of your local Saint Vincent de Paul Conference will occur at October 7th weekend services. The local Conference was formed in February 2002. From February 2002 thru 2006 the local Conference assisted over 358 "families" and provided $113,900 in aid in the following areas: Food, clothing, medical bills/medication, utilities, transportation expenses, rent/mortgage, home repair, and references for free Service Resources available in the area. In 2007 thru August we have distributed $25,341 in aid to 249 "individuals".
For new parish members and those not familiar with the Saint Vincent de Paul organization, we offer the following. On the evening of April 23, 1833 The Conference of Charity was formed by six lay university students of the Sorbonne in Paris. The then 22 year old Frederic Ozanam was the primary founder, inspiration, and soul of the group. It was not until 1835, with the formulation of the first rules, the name of the Conference was officially change to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.
All requests for aid to our local Conference are evaluated by a two person home visitation team and all funds allocated must be approved by a four member board. Our conference has 15 active home visitation teams to evaluate the need and a home provision center to supply food. All aid and assistance is held in strictest confidence between the visitation teams and the SVDP Board. We refer to the families and individuals we give aid and assistance to as our "friends". Just, if not more important than the physical and monetary support, is the emotional support and prays. It means so much to our "friends" just to know someone cares and are willing to try and help.
Our area of work is in the local community. Hard times, bad luck, illness and need is not bounded by religious affiliation, political bent, or ethnic origin and neither is our organization. We try to assist all in need to the best of our ability. The Saint Vincent de Paul organization is one of your representatives in the community and we do our best to put forth the best image possible.
Again, the weekend of October 7th is very important to our Conference. We ask for your generous support and continued prays to help us as we work on your behalf in the community.

All Saints' Day
All Saints' Day
A Holy Day of Obligation
The festival of All Saints , also sometimes known as All Saints' Day , All Hallows or Hallowmas ("hallows" meaning " saints ," and "mas" meaning " Mass "), is a feast celebrated in the honour of all the saints, known and unknown. Halloween is the day preceding it, and is so named because it is "The Eve of All Hallows". All Saints is also a Christian formula invoking all the faithful saints and martyrs , known or unknown.
In the Roman Catholic Church , All Saints' Day honours those who have attained the beautific vision in heaven , while the next day, All Souls' Day , commemorates the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached heaven.
Due to the All Saints' and All Souls' Day mass schedule,
there will no mass on Tuesday, October 30th.
