St. Mary History - Part 2
This is the second installment of “The History of Catholicism in the Vicinity of Plantersville, Grimes County, Texas” by Betty Markey. The response to the initial installment was very enthusiastic. With this history, hopefully we will appreciate even more our predecessors who paved the way for us and renew our commitment to imitate their example and prepare for future generations by our witness and work. So here is the continuation of how we Catholics found our way into the area…
ST. JOSEPH'S RESTORATION BEGINS....Thanks to Joe Magna
In 1968 a renovation of the church of St. Joseph/Stoneham was undertaken and completed with the idea of 'bringing the church up to date to celebrate the revised Liturgy of Vatican II'. Many such renovations were done with insensitivity to the feelings of the congregation and the historicity of the structure. The Council Fathers never intended to deny the past or sweep away what was familiar and loved. Their intent was to bring the celebration of the Liturgy to a fuller and more conscious participation by the assembly.
